Why I Encourage My Little Girl To Pursue Her Love For Cars....

My 4 year old has an inclination or love for cars , trucks , dinosaurs, guns, Marvel Superheroes , robots , yes all things that have been stereotyped as " Boy Stuff".While the husband and I have never stopped her from choosing toys of her liking, her interest in cars etc has sparked quite a few interesting comments like " Oh Alayna likes cars just like a boy" or "I think Alayna just missed to be a boy".

Amusing as the comments may sound, it goes to show how deep rooted these nonsensical ideas are and how at such a young age kids are exposed to such notions. The same logic applies for boys too, let them play with what they like .(When i say "what they like" , I mean definitely under adult supervision)

Long gone are the days when a woman would only be known to be the homemaker, which mind you is a very challenging job.Women , apart from taking care of their homes,  have  gone to space , and have made their mark in so many so called male oriented fields. BUT , still somewhere in the corner of most  women's minds is that added pressure that after their day job is done they are EXPECTED to cook and do the household chores once they get back home!!Note that these ideologies are not only found in uneducated families but in very highly educated families too.
Men are not expected to do the same , and if at all they offer a little help to the woman , it is considered as a huge favor.

What if our little boys at a young age are encouraged to play with a kitchen set , or dolls or help in the kitchen  if they like it.This is would inculcate in them the idea that cooking , or taking care of kids is as acceptable to society just as being an accountant or a doctor. They would also learn that cooking , cleaning and taking care of kids is their responsibility too and is not something to be looked down upon if a man does it.

Our Society is changing , but  at snail speed.If  the current generation of parents with young kids start bringing up their boys and girls with this open mindedness and by setting an example themselves , we will definitely have a future generation of men and women  who are happier and  less stressed.

While my little girl does occasionally love to play with her kitchen set or help me in the kitchen after I am back from work , I would, for the world ,  not stop her or label her love for  Superheroes and Robots.

LET EVERYONE BE ENCOURAGED TO LOVE  WHAT THEY LOVE, BE IT
